If you install high end laminate flooring or a cheaper version, fit the floor right first time to avoid any unwanted problems later. Laminate floors are available in a variety of colors and types, but most laminate flooring has a tongue and groove system. The tongue of a board perfectly fits into the groove next create your laminate flooring. In some cases, you have to knock on every board that you fit the tongue into the groove to get a secure fit.

Before you start adding your high end laminate flooring, ensuring that space is smooth and flat. Most laminate flooring manufacturers recommend less than a 3/8-inch difference between any two spots in a typical 8-by-8, 10-by-10-foot kitchen. Smooth out the high spots with sandpaper, and fill in the low spots with filler putty. When space is flat, apply foam or felt underlayment for laminate flooring.

When mounting boards along the edges or corners, cut the tongue. Cutting the tongue along the edges will do a smooth edge to fit in your molding and trim when the floor expands. Cutting the tongue with a saw or, depending on the type of high-end laminate flooring you use, make a simple box cutter.
